Breakfast Champion is the only supplier in China of 100% British pork back and streaky bacon, we import our pork directly from the UK. Why do we do this? Because we believe British Pork, is the best pork around, simple.
We work with a trusted and respected Pork producer in the UK, and we want share with you’re the journey of a humble rasher of bacon, from the farm, to your tummy.
The Farms
Our pork comes from farms typically within 2 hours of the UK processing site, the farms that supply them have been, in most cases, in partnership for generations. So, they have a strong and trusted relationship with their farmers.
How Do the Pigs Live?
The living conditions of all the farms our partners work with are inspected and governed heavily by UK legislation. On top of this farmers choose to use the Red tractor assurance standards to be able to prove they are meeting high standards of animal food safety, animal welfare, hygiene and environmental protection through every part of the food chain.
The sows are farrowed (give birth) in specialised farrowing crates, the rooms are thermally controlled to ensure maximum environmental controls are achieved to make the pigs as comfortable as possible. The sows have access to feed and water and manipulative/malleable material, they farrow and feed the piglets until they are 28 day old, the piglets in this time have heat pads to lie on, sometimes with heat lamps over-head as well.
After 28 days they are weaned from the sow, taken to specialised nursery accommodation which is typically in larger groups. After this period, they are taken outside to roam in fields.
Throughout their lives they are cared for by trained professionals that are audited annually and checked quarterly by vets. There is constant dedication to the animals that provide our livelihood, everything possible is done to ensure their comfort and happiness, happy pigs make great tasting bacon after all!
Processing AKA “Party time”
When the pork arrives in China it must meet customs regulations before it is cleared and allowed to enter. Once cleared for entry it’s party time!
Party time (as we like to call it) consists of, trimming and the most importantly curing (it’s a well-guarded secret) the pork loin and belly part of the pig, half of each yield will be smoked using applewood chips (the best for smoking in our opinion) and the other half will be left as is for those who like it traditional.
Slicing is a great way to gauging the quality of the cure, we always look for that silvery shine to confirm its top notch, every batch is tasted and the SC licence is issued to confirm a safe product, we then cook some up to confirm taste and quality is what you come to expect from Breakfast Champion (any excuse to eat bacon every day). Last stage of production is the packing stage.
Getting it to the people AKA “The After Party”
Once we have the finished product, we get ready to send to you, the people, you know the drill send us an order, leave your address and a contact number and we get that to you within 48 hours (in most cases). Once you have your bacon, your life will never be the same again.
